Why shouldn’t women have the right to choose for themselves?

Though women currently have the legal right to choose to abort their preborn children in the United States, Pro-Life Wisconsin asserts that there is no intrinsic right to abortion – simply because abortion is murder. A Supreme Court-granted right to kill tiny babies violates the First Amendment of the Constitution — which guarantees the right to life.

Why is abortion “murder”?

Abortion is murder because the life of a human being begins at fertilization/conception (verified by modern science). An elective abortion, whether surgical or chemical, is the murder of a young human being. In a civilized society, no human being ever has the right to willfully kill another innocent human being.

What about when the mother’s life is threatened? Or if she was raped? Are you saying she still shouldn't abort her baby?

An abortion is still murder if the pregnancy is high-risk or if the child was conceived in rape (or incest). A preborn child's humanity does not depend on how he or she was conceived. In rape, an innocent child should not be executed for the sin of his/her father. Any doctor with respect for the sanctity of human life will tell you that an intentional, willed abortion is never warranted. In high risk cases (such as an ectopic pregnancy), all necessary steps should be taken to save the woman’s life and the baby’s life. If a preborn baby dies while the doctor is trying to save the mother’s or baby’s life, this is not considered an abortion. A law that restricts abortions while permitting some abortions is illogical, inconsistent, and unworthy of support .

Why does Pro-Life Wisconsin get so "hung up" on birth control? Don’t contraceptives prevent abortions?

Pro-Life Wisconsin focuses educationally and legislatively on birth control for three reasons:

1) Many forms of birth control cause chemical abortions in the earliest stages of life. This scientific fact is recognized by the FDA and is disclosed by the manufacturers of these drugs and devices in the package inserts. This includes birth control pills, the Patch, the I.U.D., Depo-Provera, Norplant, and others.

2) The contraceptive mentality of wishing to separate the good and natural effect of the conjugal act from the activity itself creates a hostility to life (pregnancy). This mentality puts up a barrier against God’s creative will. If the desired effect of the contraceptive fails (a common occurrence), then legal abortion enables couples to terminate an unplanned pregnancy. Human beings, as mere co-creators, have no right to kill what God, the Author of all life, has created in His infinite wisdom.

3) The health risks of using contraceptives (again, read the package inserts) are downplayed by the manufacturers of the powerful drugs and the doctors who prescribe them. In 2002, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences labeled steroidal estrogen a "known carcinogen" (a cancer causing agent). Some side effects of birth control use include: bacterial infections, infertility, cervical cancer, blood clots, weight gain, stroke, a weakened immune system, and more.

How does birth control cause abortions?

Hormonal birth control has three mechanisms of action: 1) to suppress ovulation, 2) to thicken the woman's cervical mucus so that sperm have difficulty moving up the reproductive tract, and 3) to induce changes in the uterine lining so that if fertilization/conception does occur, the embryonic person is prevented from implanting in the uterine wall of his/her mother’s womb, resulting in an abortion. The first two mechanisms are contraceptive in nature. The third mechanism, however, is abortifacient, that is, it kills a human life. Many have sadly bought into the deception perpetuated by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology that “pregnancy” begins at implantation. Remember, a pregnancy, a unique human person actually begins at fertilization.

If Pro-Life Wisconsin promotes life, then why not support in vitro fertilization?

According to the Jones Institute, a pioneer of in vitro fertilization, as few as 10% of human embryos formed outside the womb ever result in a “normal” pregnancy. Some embryos will die before implantation, some will be discarded, some implanted and subjected to “selective reduction”, and the remainder may be frozen or used for experimentation. Because of the grave risks to these human lives produced through IVF, Pro-Life Wisconsin opposes in vitro fertilization. We sympathize with couples who wish to have their own biological children. But this illicit method of forming children in a glass petri dish shows disrespect for the sanctity of innocent human life.

Why is there more than one pro-life organization in Wisconsin?

In 1992, several Christian pro-life leaders from across the state, very concerned that there was no major pro-life organization publicly addressing many key issues (the victims of abortion condemned to death by the “life of the mother”, rape, and incest exceptions, the abortifacient nature of some forms of birth control, and the contraceptive mentality, to name a few) came together to form Pro-Life Wisconsin. The reason was simple: we recognized the need for a statewide educational and legislative organization dedicated to defending each and every innocent human life, without exception.

Though some allege that a new organization has “splintered the movement” in Wisconsin, our founders realized that unity in the pro-life movement is only of value when we are united to the Truth. Those who compromise the fundamental truth that all human beings are deserving of equal protection will never achieve victory.

As Mother Teresa and many other followers of Christ have stated, we are above all called to be faithful. By not proactively combating the destructive nature of contraceptives, and the politically popular rape, incest, and “life of the mother” exceptions, many Christians realized that their call to be faithful was being sacrificed for perceived political gain. We can’t simply be about regulating abortion. We must be about ending the holocaust of all chemically and surgically induced abortion, Defending God’s Plan for life.

Can’t we eventually ban all abortion by making incremental gains?

Abortion on demand was legalized in the first place (by the Supreme Court decisions in Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton) because several states in the union were allowing abortions in certain circumstances. Therefore it was illogical to some members of the Supreme Court to recognize the personhood (i.e. the First and Fourteenth Amendment rights) of the preborn. Instead, they extended the “right to privacy” granted in Griswold v. Connecticut (which essentially legalized and mainstreamed contraception in 1965). The end result of these actions is abortion for any reason at any time during a pregnancy. Incremental gains are acceptable >I>only if they do not violate the fundamental right to life of every human person from the moment of fertilization onward.

What do you think of those people who pray in front of abortion clinics?

Pro-Life Wisconsin recognizes the importance of all aspects of pro-life work, including non-violent direct action. We believe that God calls people to witness to the truth and defend preborn babies in different ways. Any peaceful pro-life action should be valued. Some within the pro-life movement have decried those who choose to be involved in direct action to save preborn babies. Pro-Life Wisconsin recognizes the pro-life battle as educational, legislative, and spiritual in nature. As a Christian organization, we can’t encourage enough prayer and sacrifice for an end to all abortion.
